Using a commercial fertilizer spreader? Learn the best times to apply lime & fertilizer
Lime is an important and commonly used tool in reducing acidic soil conditions. While lime can be applied whenever testing indicates it is needed, it is generally recommended that lime be applied in the fall to enable the material to break down over the winter and absorb into the soil for the next growing season.
When utilizing a commercial fertilizer spreader, there is an entirely separate set of rules. In general, fertilizer should be applied at the time of planting or after germination, referred to as top dressing. For pasture crops, spring and fall are the optimal times to fertilize, but local soil conditions and many other variables may affect that suggested timeline.
Keep in mind, these are general guidelines. Application recommendations for your particular crop and location can be attained from your local County Extension Services or the USDA.
