The growing popularity of ethanol has greatly increased production, and with it the demand for suitable feedstock. In the U.S., corn is the most popular feedstock due to its affordability and availability. However, with the increased demand for corn, scientists are working hard to find ways to avoid overburdening the corn market as the ethanol industry expands. To achieve this, several leading scientists have focused on increasing conversion efficiency.
Food technologist David Johnston has been working on a process to use protease enzymes from microbial and fungal sources to make ethanol more efficiently. He discovered that these enzymes increase available nutrients, thereby accelerating the fermentation of sugars. He also found these enzymes have the ability to assist with the dewatering of the solids that remand after ethanol extraction.
And Johnston’s discovery is just one of many in the ethanol industry. Scientists have been working to maximize the possibilities of this potentially revolutionary energy option.
