Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION:

Should I use a Hydraulic or Mechanical Spreader?

ANSWER:

Hydraulic Spreaders vs. Mechanical Spreaders

As technology has evolved and offered new tools for farming operations, the choice between old and new has become commonplace. One common, necessary decision is the choice between newer hydraulic spreaders and traditional mechanical spreaders. Mechanical and hydraulic fertilizer spreaders have several distinct differences:

Mechanical Spreaders:
  • Use a system of directly driven belts, pulleys, and shafts that take more time to maintain than hydraulic tractors.

  • Have no relief, so if something gets caught there is nothing to keep the tractor from breaking.

  • Have a lower initial cost.
Hydraulic Spreaders:
  • Require little regular maintenance

  • Provides a lot more flexibility than mechanical tractors. You can speed up and slow down the conveyor independent of the spinners using a simple flow control valve, which gives you the ability to put down the desired rate.

  • Have built in relief.

  • Are more expensive than mechanical tractors.

Mechanical fertilizer spreaders are very popular for farmers, because of their low cost. However, they are seen by some as a liability due to all the problems that can arise. Today, as farmers are challenged to be more efficient in their practices, hydraulic fertilizer spreaders allow them to achieve that level of effectiveness.
